Picosecond superconducting single-photon optical detector

چکیده
We experimentally demonstrate a supercurrent-assisted, hotspot-formation mechanism for ultrafast detection and counting of visible and infrared photons. A photon-induced hotspot leads to a temporary formation of a resistive barrier across the superconducting sensor strip and results in an easily measurable voltage pulse. Subsequent hotspot healing in ;30 ps time frame, restores the superconductivity ~zero-voltage state!, and the detector is ready to register another photon. Our device consists of an ultrathin, very narrow NbN strip, maintained at 4.2 K and current-biased close to the critical current. It exhibits an experimentally measured quantum efficiency of ;20% for 0.81 mm wavelength photons and negligible dark counts. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1388868#

Enhancing Detection Efficiency by Applying an Optical Cavity Structure in a Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detector
We report on the enhancement of system detection efficiency in a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) by applying the optical cavity structure. The nanowire was made using 4nm-thick NbN thin films and covered with an SiO cavity and Au mirror designed for 1300–1600 nm wavelengths. The device is mounted into fibercoupled packages, and installed in a practical multichannel syste...

Photon-counting detectors can be used in optical communications links to provide a large enhancement in receiver sensitivity over conventional photodetectors at near-infrared wavelengths (1.3–1.55 microns) [1]. However, the highest data rate that has been demonstrated to date using these techniques is about 100 kbits/sec for a receiver consisting of a single InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD), w...

متن کامل1.25-Gbit/s photon-counting optical communications using a two- element superconducting nanowire single photon detector
The sensitivity of a high-rate photon-counting optical communications link depends on the performance of the photon counter used to detect the optical signal. In this paper, we focus on ways to reduce the effect of blocking, which is loss due to time periods in which the photon counter is inactive following a preceding detection event. This blocking loss can be reduced by using an array of phot...

We demonstrate a new approach to measuring high-order temporal coherences that uses a four-element superconducting nanowire single-photon detector. The four independent, interleaved single-photonsensitive elements parse a single spatial mode of an optical beam over dimensions smaller than the minimum diffraction-limited spot size. Integrating this device with four-channel time-tagging electroni...
